When a band is pigeon-holed into the genre of ’progressive rock’ one would be forgiven for imagining a pretentious art student recital or perhaps Bill Bailey taking the mick. However, the mighty Magenta have been kicking all expectations in the proverbials and have claimed their place as progressive rock royalty, redefining the genre itself and demonstrating just how acclaim-worthy it can be.
Bursting onto the lagging scene in 2001 with debut album, Revolutions, they more than lived up to the name. Touring from their native Cardiff by way of Mexico, Europe and North America they quickly garnered the attention of the masses. By not making the mistake (omnipresent in prog-rock) of taking themselves too seriously they have been blessed with the award winning combination of excellent music and flawless showmanship.
With the jaw-dropping vocals of Christina Murphy and the musical genius of band founder Rob Reed their studio albums and live shows alike blow away their contemporaries. With every release and subsequent tour the band earn themselves an army of new followers from all the far flung corners of the globe. From Peru to Russia (and everywhere in between) songs such as the epic Gluttony, I’m Alive and King of the Skies are major attractions that keep the stunned crowds returning for more.
Many albums and seven international awards later Magenta have sealed their place amongst the big guns. They release new album, Metamorphosis, on 21st April 2008 and promise darker, more intense undertones. Featuring just four tracks exploring themes of death and faith, Metamorphosis looks set to delight fans in new and exciting ways.
The renowned Progression magazine stated “There can ever be too much Magenta”. Make sure you get your dose.
