As part of Powysland Museum’s newest exhibition: “Alexandra, Princess and Queen”, the museum is having an open evening for visitors to view the exhibition and to learn about Victorian and Edwardian dancing by a professional dance teacher Verna Wass and to have a go themselves.
Both as Princess of Wales and Queen, Alexandra loved to dance. During her third pregnancy she developed rheumatic fever and thrombosis in one leg, which was left permanently stiff. However, she overcame this handicap. She walked with a slight limp, which actually made her look as if she were gliding along and this trait became fashionable and was copied by many of the ladies within the royal circle. She also trained up her leg to enable her to dance, skate and ride again.
Verna Wass is a professional drama and dance teacher with years of experience teaching in schools and running workshops. She specialises in historical dances. She will be spending Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at the museum teaching schoolchildren to dance and on Thursday night there will be an opportunity for everybody to have a go.
