Greta Scacchi stars in
THE DEEP BLUE SEA
Terence Rattigan

Director Edward Hall

"This is unquestionably Terence Rattigan’s best play" Mail on Sunday

"The most powerfully moving drama to have been written in England since the Second World War…Rattigan’s masterpiece" Daily Telegraph

"The greatest of British mid-century dramas" Spectator

When you’re caught between the devil and the deep blue sea, the deep blue sea can sometimes look very inviting, according to the heroine of Terence Rattigan’s 1952 study of obsession and the destructive power of love.

In this powerful drama of passion versus loyalty, Hester Collyer, the daughter of a clergyman and wife of a judge is foundering in the closing stages of a hopeless affair. Freddie Page, her lover, a handsome but shallow ex-Battle of Britain pilot, is out of his depth in their relationship, overwhelmed by the strength of an emotion he is incapable of reciprocating.

Greta Scacchi is an internationally renowned film, theatre and television actress whose many films include Heat and Dust, White Mischief, Emma, Presumed Innocent with Harrison Ford and The Player with Tim Robbins. In 1996 she won an Emmy Award for the television film Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny.

Director Edward Hall has worked extensively at the National Theatre, in the West End and all over the world. He is the Artistic Director of the highly acclaimed all-male Propeller Company which was founded to present Shakespeare’s plays in a style contemporary to their writing. Award-winning work includes A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Rose Rage. He has recently directed Mark Ravenhill’s Dick Whittington at the Barbican and Somerset Maugham’s For Services Rendered.
