Pamela Leung
Pamela Leung’s work explores the unexpected. Creating god-like characters with colourful effigies and haunting narratives, her ideas stem from an amalgam of traditional Chinese culture, along with Western folklore and her studies as an artist in the West. Leung creates personal interpretations of Eastern mythological stories; some she learned as a child in Hong Kong.

With mystical figures bearing supernatural messages, visitors to this intimate exhibition confront the unknown and the world of dreams. Leung writes: "Deities (in China) may possess human or animal forms which are respected equally. My half-human, half-animal figures are derived from the concept of natural transformation in Chinese cosmology".

Several of the artist’s works reflect a confrontation with illness, though her concepts can also be witty and playful, which reflect her gregarious character. Ultimately, Leung questions our desire to treat non-western art as exotic with stereotypical representations.
