Growing up in Cornwall with 60s folk musicians for parents, Tom Baxter was always a likely creative lad. Starting a band with his brother in his teens set Tom on a path that would lead not only to his music selling by the bucketload, virtually on word of mouth alone, but also to his visual art being exhibited in London and consequentially becoming much sought after. Next month, Tom brings his live show to Swansea.
From family bands to covers bands, Tom had always been involved in music but it was when he started introducing his own material into his sets that a real buzz began. This culminated in his first album, Feather And Stone, which sold 70,000 copies to those in the know and those who had witnessed his inspiring live performances.
His second album, Skybound, recorded by the same producer who worked with Nerina Pallot, Sheryl Crow and Roddy Frame, was released on January 7th this year and pulled in some great reviews. The Times and The Guardian gave the album four stars with the latter comparing Baxter to Van Morrison and Marvin Gaye and GQ magazine praised his “emotive soul-baring”.
With his songs featuring in hit films (Better featured in the Simon Pegg/Dylan Moran comedy, Run, Fat Boy, Run), funding and releasing hit records himself and with Baxter raking in rave reviews all round, he looks set to be an artist to keep an eye out for.
