Anthony Shapland

Born in Pontypridd, Anthony Shapland is a Cardiff- based artist who has exhibited nationally and internationally.

His first solo exhibition, touring from Chapter gallery, Cardiff includes a series of films which observe the everyday, but also reference ideas of staging and scripting. For example A Setting (2007) shows the slow descent into darkness in a rural setting.

The exhibition also includes a new work made in the streets of Swansea.

The Richard & Rosemary Wakelin Purchase Award 2008 has been awarded this year to Welsh artist, Anthony Shapland for his DVD, A Sign, 2006.

This year’s selector, David Alston, considered that the artist’s poignant view of the landscape in A Sign revisits this tradition, playing with our uncertainties, forcing us to reconsider the everyday things of which we feel so sure.
