UK/2007/118 mins/15. Dir: Mike Leigh. With Sally Hawkins, Alexis Zegerman, Eddie Marsan.
Mike Leigh returns at the top of his game with a joyful, life-affirming film which focuses on Poppy, a 30-year-old, glass-half-full, Londoner with a bright outlook. She’s a primary-school teacher who loves her job, loves her friends, and loves life. Light-footed and truthful, Leigh’s use of comedy to reveal truths that are both happy and sad, is reminiscent of the TV films that established his reputation such as Nuts in May and Abigail’s Party.
’Mike Leigh’ by Chapter Cinema Programmer Tony Whitehead (part of the Manchester University Press series - British Film Makers) is on sale in the Chapter Shop price £14.99.
The screenings at 8.00pm on Tue 13 May and 6.15pm on Mon 19 May will be subtitled.
