Context
From 7th – 13th June 2008, Cardiff School of Art and Design presents ‘Context08’, a showcase of work by all 35 final year students from the BA (Hons) Contemporary Textile Practice degree programme. The exhibition will be held on-site at the course’s location, the UWIC Llandaff campus at Western Avenue, Cardiff.

Students on the Contemporary Textile Practice course select from two routes in which to specialise: either Designer, or Artist/Maker. This results in a diverse mix of work, ranging from contemporary surface pattern design to installation art and sculptural objects. The work challenges traditional preconceptions of ‘textiles’, using a wide range of both 2D and 3D materials and techniques. These include: silk-screen and digital print, dye, hand, machine and digital stitch, felt-making, video and digital imaging, glass, resins, metal, wire, plastics, and the manipulation of found objects.

Concepts explored by work in this exhibition range from issues of personal identity, rites of passage, memory, love and loss, to political statements about terrorism, the environment, the dissolution of craft in the everyday, and our changing cultural identity.

Contemporary Textile Practice at Cardiff School of Art and Design, UWIC, provides a rich educational and professional experience. It has strong links with industry, encouraging students to work to commercial standards, through engagement in competitions such as Design Wales Ffres. It offers a broad education, which challenges the individual; nurturing visual literacy, manual dexterity, theoretical and contextual understanding of design and making, together with a thorough and relevant professional training. The students are encouraged to explore and interact with the medium of textiles in its broadest sense, whilst retaining a strong sense of meaning within their personal visual languages.
