Ceramicist Mick Morgan and textile artist Matthew Harris will be showing their recent work at Craft in the Bay.
Having studied in London, Harris now lives in Gloucestershire and has exhibited nationally and internationally, most recently at the Fibre Art Now exhibition in Munich and at SOFA in Chicago.
Harris is an enthusiast of modern music and the visual patterns and marks that he sees in particular in the work by composers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen and George Crumb. His striking cloths derive from the drawings Harris has made from these musical scores.
His drawings and cloth-making are closely linked; ’there’s always a physicality involved, a sense of working the surface’. Harris’ textiles draw the viewer in to look at the detail - the quality of the line, the layering of the fabrics and the marks of the stitch work. Standing back from the work you become aware of the movement and rhythms across the vertical and horizontal lines of the layered textile pieces.
Morgan’s ceramics appear to share with Harris, this passion for mark making and breaking up a surface with the suggestion of movement.
Morgen claims to love the haphazard - the happy accidents. The firing of work can be very unpredictable at times. However he also admits to being a control freak and hopes to manipulate the making process in such a way as to allow ’accidents’ to happen.
Both artists will be giving talks about their work. Dates to be confirmed.
