Duffy
It’s rare for a Welsh solo artist - a singer-songwriter - to be picked up by a major record label and be touted as something of a gem in the UK music scene. But Duffy is the one forging that path at the moment.

Some of the media machine have hyped her as the “next Amy Winehouse”, but in reality Duffy is an artist competing for a much bigger crown than that – she has been touted as the next Dusty Springfield. Being blessed with the powerhouse vocals of a ‘60s blues belter it’s easy to see why such comparisons have been made.

Duffy, still in her early 20’s is from a sleepy seaside town on the Llyn Peninsular, North Wales. It was here where despite not having a record shop anywhere near, that Duffy developed her songwriting skills, discovered music that inspired her and honed her smoky, soulful voice.

Her adventures really began when her talent attracted the attentions of ex-60ft Dolls man Richard Partfitt and Catatonia’s Owen Powell. The duo put her in touch with Rough Trade Records a label not hitherto known for their love of 60s-inspired soul. But recognizing the talent of the young soulstress they quickly signed her. This proved a blessing for Duffy as the label allowed her time to develop and were instrumental in pointing her in the direction of Suede’s ex-guitar virtuoso Bernard Butler who became her producer and co-writer.
